1 - Route 66 LIFE'S A TRIP

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
There comes a time when youโ€™re sent on your way
You might feel as though youโ€™re on a lost highway
There's twists and turns that happen for a reason
But it's all good - life has its seasons
Now I can cruise at my own pace
The rearview mirror reflects my younger face

<VERSE 2>
Not all that glitters new is gold
There's a blessing to growing up and growing old
Stepping into my older self
The ways of youth go up on the shelf
I sang about her many a night
Now I have her in my sights

<Pre-CHORUS>
My old friend, Route 66
A metaphor that lifeโ€™s a trip

<CHORUS>
Lifeโ€™s a trip, bypass the fast
Now I'm makinโ€™ my own tracks
So, how do I find my bliss
Let me sum it up like this
It ainโ€™t about the money, fortune or fame
That my friend is a short-term gain
I sing about Route 66
My metaphor that lifeโ€™s a trip

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 3>
In time a rollinโ€™ stone eventually stops
Days and years click down on the clock
I'm glad I found my old friend
Ooh, I love whatโ€™s cominโ€™ โ€˜round the bend
Drove onto the dreaming byway
It's just an exit off the lost highway

<VERSE 4>
Now that I've found my treasure trove
I can trust in life to unfold
Love always will and love has always been
The road to guide you โ€˜til the end

<Pre-CHORUS>
My old friend, Route 66
A metaphor that lifeโ€™s a trip, lifeโ€™s a trip

<CHORUS>
Lifeโ€™s a trip, bypass the fast
Now I'm makinโ€™ my own tracks
So, tell me, how do I find my bliss
Let me sum it up like this
It ainโ€™t about the money, fortune or fame
That my friend is a short-term gain
I sing about Route 66
Just a metaphor that lifeโ€™s...life's a trip
Lifeโ€™s a trip

<TAG>
Ohh...lifeโ€™s a trip, lifeโ€™s a trip
Ooh...

2 - Route 66 YOUR MOTHER ROAD

(A Tribute to the Indigenous People)
Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
As we look for our tribe
And natureโ€™s heartsong
We realize
It was yours all along
Your footprints in the dust
She is your Mother Road
This is a story that must be told

<VERSE 2>
These are your trails
And sacred routes
They were trespassers
There's no doubt
I cannot undo
What has been done
But I can stay the path to live as one

<CHORUS>
I will stop and take time
I will not turn my head
I will acknowledge the tears you shed
These are your trails and sacred routes
And with a humble heart
I now sing out

<VERSE 3>
To all the tribes
And natureโ€™s heartsong
We realize
You were there all along
To all the tribes
And natureโ€™s heartsong
We realize
You were there all along

<REFRAIN>
And your spirit is eternal on the Mother Road
Your spirit is eternal on the Mother Road

3 - Route 66 BLACK BLIZZARD

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<INTRO spoken>
The dust rolled in like a black blizzard...

<CHORUS>
Black Blizzard, please tell me why
Black Blizzard billows up in the sky
Black Blizzard send us out on the road
Leavin' with nothin' is still a heavy load

<VERSE 1>
Black Blizzard, a wall without hope
Black Blizzard drove us out of our homes
Black Blizzard, no more seeds to be sown
Fell into the arms of the Mother Road

<BRIDGE 1>
The dust came along with the Great Depression
Desperate migration for a better condition
Found our way to Route 66
Lord, oh Lord, grant me this wish

<CHORUS>
Black Blizzard, please tell me why
Black Blizzard billows up in the sky
Black Blizzard send us out on the road
Leavin' with nothin' is still a heavy load

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<BRIDGE 2>
Oh, Mother Road, please shoulder the pain
Nothin' to lose and so much to gain
No rain came and the air was so dry
Could not find a way to sit down and cry

<MODULATE>

<VERSE 2>
Black Blizzard choked all our dreams
Black Blizzard, fell apart at the seams
Black Blizzard, poison in the air
We felt as if the world didn't care

<MODULATE>

<VERSE 3>
Black Blizzard, I need salvation
Where's the love in this nation
Black Blizzard, let in the water
Spare the souls of our sons and daughters

<CHORUS>
Black Blizzard, please tell me why
Black Blizzard billow up in the sky
Black Blizzard send us out on the road
Leavin' with nothin'...

<TAG>
Oh, leavin' with nothin'
Leavin' with nothin'
But a heavy load
Ooh, heavy load
Leavinโ€™ with nothinโ€™

4 - Route 66 GOTTA GO LITTLE DARLIN'

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<INTRO>
Mmm...ooh...

<VERSE 1>
Gotta go little darlinโ€™, we can't stay here
The air is choking and the skies ainโ€™t clear
This is not what I hoped for, not what Iโ€™d planned
Just once more I'm asking of you, stand by your man

<VERSE 2>
Gotta go little darlinโ€™, we gotta find a home
Stay right here beside me as we ramble and roam
I want more for our children than a life such as this
Let's follow the dreamerโ€™s caravan on Highway 66

<VERSE 3>
Gotta go little darlinโ€™, so come take my hand
Grab up the kids together, we gotta cross this land
We're leavinโ€™ with nothinโ€™, rain and grain are what we lack
Look to the western skies ahead and don't look back

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 1 repeated>
Gotta go little darlinโ€™, we can't stay here
The air is choking and the skies ainโ€™t clear
This is not what I hoped for, not what Iโ€™d planned
Just once more Iโ€™m asking of you, stand by your man

<TAG>
Oh, just once more Iโ€™m asking of you
Stand by your man

5 - Route 66 STREETS OF GOLD

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<INTRO>
Ooh...

<VERSE 1>
We left in an olโ€™ Jalopy Mama, Papa and me
With the kids, the dog and a bag of broken dreams
The dust from the drought left us with no choice
Headed to California on a slim slice of hope

<VERSE 2>
Along with the dust and Great Depression
We could barely hold on or find a blessing
The highway cradled us just like a mother
Urging us to go just a little further

<Pre-CHORUS>
Papa left this earth (ooh) as he fell asleep (ooh)
No more bankers (ooh) or bills to keep (ooh)
He ainโ€™t got no worries (ooh) or troubles like that (ooh)
Got a job in Heaven on a glorious track

<CHORUS>
Itโ€™s alright that Grandpa died on that road
Heโ€™s in Heaven now, sweepinโ€™ streets of gold
It's alright that Grandpa died on that road
Heโ€™s in Heaven now, sweepinโ€™ streets of gold

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 3>
We traveled with a hundred hungry families
Lookinโ€™ for jobs, pickinโ€™ fruit off trees
We'd stop and set up camp and Route 66 was home
People died and many a baby born

<Pre-CHORUS>
Papa left this earth (ooh) as he fell asleep (ooh)
No more bankers (ooh) or bills to keep (ooh)
He ainโ€™t got no worries (ooh) or troubles like that (ooh)
He got a job in Heaven on a glorious track

<CHORUS>
Itโ€™s alright that Grandpa died on that road
Heโ€™s in Heaven now, sweepinโ€™ streets of gold
Itโ€™s alright that Grandpa died on that Mother Road
Heโ€™s in Heaven now, sweepinโ€™ streets of gold

6 - Route 66 EL PASO BOUND

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
Remember the time of stagecoach bank robbers
Masked men on horses from a different world
They had a charm while taking your money
Thought of themselves as entrepreneurs

<VERSE 2>
Instead of a character from a dime novel
A gunfighter lost in a blaze of glory
They chose a little virtue over vice
The outlaw poet from a true story

<VERSE 3>
Now, the Old Trails Road turned into a highway
Known today as Route 66
Now, there were big cars and long motor coaches
A new way to travel across the U.S.

<VERSE 4>
Just a step in time from the horse-drawn stagecoaches
Eighteen passengers boarded a Greyhound
Filled with high hopes to rise above the Depression
They left Oklahoma, El Paso bound

<CHORUS 1>
Dark was the night and hot was the weather
On the 7th of June 1931
When unknown to passengers quietly sleeping
Two desperate men boarded, concealing a gun

<VERSE 5>
They held tickets for the Texas town, Shamrock
All appeared peaceful, but alas, no such luck
Just barely outside the town of Texola
The driver felt a handgun to his back

<VERSE 6>
Demanding the driver quickly pull over (ooh)
Five men from two cars rushed on the bus (ooh)
Announcing quite calmly, "This is a robbery. (ooh)
Please step outside. We're in quite the rush." (ooh)

<VERSE 7>
Completing the search, claiming all of the money
They asked about family and "Where do you live?"
Giving back a little money to each of their victims
"Now, wire your loved ones and have some breakfast."

<CHORUS 2>
From the headlines came the banner news story
"This rivals the thrill of the Old West"
Wild, kind-hearted thieves and bank robbers
Acting so cavalier and chivalrous

<VERSE 8>
No one was harmed and the bus disabled
Away drove the gunmen ne'er to be found
The Texas sun rose onto a new morning
And a memory for everyone El Paso bound

<INSTRUMENTAL> mmm...

<VERSE 9>
So, from this story, I long for the romance (ooh)
With wide open spaces and painted sunsets (ooh)
Even when facing the chaos, you'll find (ooh)
The human condition as good as it gets

<OUTRO>
Mmm...

7 - Route 66 IN THE AISLE SHE DANCED

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
History discovers our thoughts and ideas can be clever
There once was a golden age of travel
The airplanes of the highway
The scenic bus ride
We're all born to find our dream

<VERSE 2>
The old man with a violin
The young woman holding ballet shoes
Two souls until now, unknown to each other
Everyoneโ€™s boarding dressed up for their new destination...aah
We're all born to chase our dream

<BRIDGE>
Up on the Mother Road, the caravan of dreams
Conversations begin, so tightly confined
"Would you dance if I played in the aisle for you?"
We hold the audience. Thereโ€™s nowhere else to be."

<VERSE 3>
She smiled as she slipped on her shoes
And stood in a ballerina pose
With vibration of sound, her body flowed
In the aisle she danced

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 4>
Even those who were lost, sat not yet knowing their dreams
Suddenly, joyfully awakened
Their souls lifted up to the sky
Music and movement made everyone high

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<OUTRO>
While in the aisle she danced Ooh...

<INTRO spoken>
I am Adrianna, Spirit of the Mother Road, "El Camino Madre." Walk with me to the cauldron of fire.

<VERSE 1>
Adrianna traveled far
Windsong plays my guitar
She walks the old road
Hidden spirit of a love untold
She waited, searching the streets
Carrying roses for love as old as
The Three Sisters' fire

<VERSE 2>
Adrianna, Spirit of Love
Windfall of music above
Haunting old shops of adobe
Shadow the way
Are you waiting, desperately searching the streets?
Carrying roses for love as old as
The Three Sisters' fire?

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<CHORUS>
All of the souls from then โ€˜til today
Walk with the essence of passion
El fuego del amor que arde eternamente
All of the souls from then โ€˜til today
Walk with the essence of passion

Your soul must be bold
And your heart must be open
The past and the present are interwoven
Into the curtain of time and fire
Revealing the deepest form of desire
El fuego del amor que arde eternamente

<INSTRUMENTAL>

Adrianna walks with you
Love is amplified by two
Hold tightly the hand that you choose
While holding the rose of desire
Commit your love to the cauldron of fire

Get on the Mother Road and you're bound to see

The ring on my left hand proves that I'm right

18 - Route 66 SILKY STRINGS

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
Back when I was very young
A single sound quieted my tongue
And it haunts me still today
I just had to learn and play

<CHORUS 1>
Silky strings with a bar of chrome
Swell and glide, blue and lonesome
Memories I'd never trade
From the steel guitar they made

<VERSE 2>
So many men and the women too
Come from the towns, just like me and you
Hypnotized in a beautiful trance
Pedals swell and the people dance

<CHORUS 1 repeated>
To silky strings with a bar of chrome
They swell and glide, blue and lonesome
Memories I'd never trade
From the steel guitar they made

<VERSE 3>
I've heard the sound over land and seas
Creation sings on these silky strings
Reaching for an unfound star
I live my life with a steel guitar

<CHORUS 2>
And silky strings at my fingertips
On the road, Route 66
Memories I'd never trade
From the steel guitar they made

<TAG>
Memories I'd never trade
From the steel guitar they made โ€“ mmm, oh

<VERSE 1>
Weโ€™re gonna get on the road and just start drivinโ€™
Hear the music that sets the timin'

<VERSE 2>
Hear the sound of the pedal steel
No other guitar has the same appeal
So, cominโ€™ back should come as no surprise

<CHORUS 1>

Where the old is new with brand new beginnings
Route 66 is where we're heading
Come enjoy all the music we're sharinโ€™ - yeah, let it fly

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 3>
Hold it now when you hear the sustain
Don't go too fast, there's nothinโ€™ to gain
Lemme hear those tones goinโ€™ from lower to higher (higher)

The roads seen it all from country to jazz

You'll see neon lights, singinโ€™ old melodies
While makinโ€™ new friends and makinโ€™ memories

Playin' tribute to Mr. Buddy Emmons
All the years of music and tone and dedication
The pedal steel was born from American ambition

Generation 2 on a road without end
It's all here to stay, along with 66
Double your joy and baby, double your kicks - yeah

<VERSE 1>
Don't think I'll find the time today to sit and worry
Whatever's on my mind, I'm gonna bury

Now, I remember what you said
It's time for us to hit the Mother Road

<CHORUS>
So, grab the road map and the guidebook
We're headinโ€™ out for the night
There's several hundred miles of fun that's gonna end just right
We'll detour down Moonshine Lane
Grab our own little claim to fame
With the outlaws and the others back in time โ€“ yeah, yeah

<INSTRUMENTAL> Turn it up!

<VERSE 2>
Time moves on, frame by frame, passing old gas stations
But distance can take wing, forget about the destination
The winding road is rolling free
Till the exit that we see
With crazy visions on this road of dreams

We're headinโ€™ out for the night

Oh, just like the moon sets the tides
My plans revolve around us tonight
My work is done and you're such a sight
Gonna get ready for Saturday night

<VERSE 2>
We can go to the club maybe later
But I don't think there's anything better
Than cruisinโ€™ out here no matter the weather
Drivinโ€™ on a Saturday night

I'll take your hand, I wouldn't hesitate
'Cause you're the only one
You and I are bound by fate
The best is yet to come

Let's just drive and get away - -

25 - Route 66 COLORS OF THE RAINBOW

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
Driving through eight states
And three times zones
A road to somewhere
Out in the unknown
A stretch of road where
Tried and true exist
Take yourself a journey
Down old Route 66

<VERSE 2>
A hundred years of
Change and exploration
Challenge the human spirit
Join the celebration
We're on this road for
Honest reflection
Finding our better angels
In human connection

<BRIDGE>
No need for a green book
Everyone can celebrate that
Even though it's painful
As we look back
We've come a long way
In this human race
I see my reflection in your eyes
As we stand face to face

<CHORUS>
Inside all the
Colors of the rainbow
Discover the peace
Experience the joy
Take a chance on change
A daring adventure
Follow the heart of love
A soul worthy endeavor

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 1>
There's somethinโ€™ โ€˜bout rollinโ€™ along
That reclaims your heart
A picture painted fresh and new
And a different place to start
So, roll along this old road
Leave without a care
Smilinโ€™ faces greet you
When you're there

<VERSE 2>
There's a stretch of highway
Where one is free to dream
You can strum a banjo
Or you can dance and sing
So, find the time, make up your mind
And take yourself a trip
Chase a dream down Highway 66

<CHORUS>
โ€˜Cause when you dream your favorite dream
Dreams become reality
So, make your move, find a groove
Windfall of momentum

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<VERSE 3>
There's been cowboys and musicians
And dreamers of all kinds
With thanks to an Angel
We even have some signs
We often call her Mother Road
For on her trail we fled
With hope and faith, she wiped the tears we shed

<VERSE 4>
You'll touch the ghosts of yesterday (ooh)
And those who walked the plains (ooh)
Feel the souls in all that lives (ooh)
And secrets she contains (ooh)
The purple sky, the eagle flies (ooh)
The lone coyoteโ€™s call
Upon her wings, she carried them all

<CHORUS>
โ€˜Cause when you dream your favorite dream
Dreams become reality
So, make your move, find a groove
Windfall of momentum

<INSTRUMENTAL>

<TAG>
So, make your move, find a groove

Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Buddy and Dylan
Chess Records, The Rolling Stones and Lonnie Mack

<VERSE 2>
Oh, the music took me out of this world (ooh)
So, I wandered further (ooh)
At thirteen years, I had a guitar in my hand - yes, I did (ooh)

Man, I hit the road with my brothers (ooh)
We tried for twenty years to hit the big time with that band (ooh)

<CHORUS 1>
We were right there where we belong
Just aโ€™ flyinโ€™ high and laughinโ€™ loud (ooh)

To doinโ€™ anybody wrong (ah, no, no)
Right there (right there)
Where we belong - alright

<VERSE 3>
Ooh, drivinโ€™ down Route 66
A spirit Knight Templar
I found my tribe

Herein lies the contents of the Holy Grail (ooh)
Oh, and to all those who dare to dream I wish you well (ah)

<CHORUS 2>
We were right there where we belong (right there where we belong)
The past lives in the future (ooh)

Oh, right here (right here)
Oh, right here (right here)
Where we belong (ooh - ooh)

<INTRO>
Ooh...

<VERSE 1>
Summer skies paint
A haunting lullaby
Colors fade as autumn leaves
Begin to fly
For you and I

<VERSE 2>
I'm so glad we took a little time
Away from home
A precious gift
Time for us to be alone
On our own

<CHORUS>
You and I have chased
The dreams of doves
Peaceful, calm acceptance
From above
We are strong
Hand-in-hand
We chose our lives
We took a stand
You and I could
Never lose our love

<INSTRUMENTAL> (ooh)

<VERSE 3>
Just like two desperate
Teenage runaways
We found ourselves
On Route 66 today
Let's fly away (fly away)

<VERSE 4>
The seasons change
But you and I remain (ooh)
Together forever through
Sunshine and rain (ooh)
Through the flame

The dreams of doves
Peaceful, calm acceptance
From above
We are strong
Hand-in-hand
We chose our lives
We took a stand
And you and I could
Never lose our love

The dreams of doves
Peaceful, calm acceptance

Hand-in-hand
We chose our lives

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
Christmas is coming
It's that time of year
Anticipation in the air
Crisp and clear Candles, treetops
Spices and pies
Friends gather
Far and near

<VERSE 2>
Taking a detour
Down Route 66
Passing the time
Crunching holiday mix
Haven't got a care
I'd go anywhere
โ€˜Cause I'm falling in love
With you

<BRIDGE 1>
Ring the Bell
Beat the drum
The yuletide season
Has begun

<VERSE 3>
You're the one I'm with
On December 25th
I hope you donโ€™t mind
That I brought you a gift
A melody filled with
Sweet harmonies about
Falling in love
With you

<VERSE 4>
The words that I sing
Bring such joy to me
I sing it alone
Or out caroling
I want everyone
On Earth here to see
My Christmas love For you

<BRIDGE 2>
Feel the joy
Bring some cheer
The holiday season
Is already here

<VERSE 5>
As Christmas passes
Into a New Year
Be by my side
Stay close
And stay near
The holiday lingers
As long as you're here
Always in love
With you

<TAG>
And I know you love
Me too

30 - Route 66 ENJOY THE JOURNEY

Copyright 2025 Kurt M. Johnston
Songwriters: Kurt M. Johnston & Suzanne Reese-Johnston

<VERSE 1>
One day it's toys and balloons
Turn around and all too soon
It's grade school lessons and Geometry
Am I OK? Do they like me?
Then out the door, this is your life
Play it fast and you might survive
The twists and turns, the push and pull
Look at the glass - is it half full?

<CHORUS 1>
I've seen this life from both lanes now
The fast and slow, and yet somehow
The soul rests well, here and now
In living everyday

<VERSE 2>
Chase the moon - reach for the stars
Identify, who you are
Believe the dreams and fairytales
Guard your soul - it's not for sale
Life flips a switch, there's family
Navigate your choices carefully
With somethings lost and somethings gained
You decide of what remains

<CHORUS 2>
I've seen this life from both lanes now
From north and south, and yet somehow
The soul rests well, here and now
In living everyday

<VERSE 3>
The mirror laughed, โ€œI've been replacedโ€
Staring at an older face
Take the detour - take the drive
You're here now - you have arrived
With this chapter, with this page
Write the words of a wise old sage
For you've been blessed and bestowed
Enjoy the journey, down the road

<CHORUS 3>
I've seen this life from both lanes now
From east to west, and yet somehow
The soul rests well in the here and now
In living everyday

<TAG>
The soul rests well, here and now
In living everyday

Thank you, Route 66. Youโ€™ve taught me life's a trip to revere and enjoy.
