If you are here on this page, it is because you want to know about the man behind the music, truth is itโ€™s the music behind the man. My tendencies have always been to exist in a world of music. A world that brings solace to my soul, a world that fed my passion and curiosity beyond any โ€œhighโ€ that could be pursued. Music is a โ€œhighโ€ that lifts me even after 50+ years of playing and studying.

I have cultivated ย a lifetime of listening, learning, growing, always reaching for new ways to express myself; guitar, banjo, pedal steel guitar, bass, mandolin, dobro and piano.

It all began at home. My father would start early weekend mornings playing records downstairs in the living room. Playing music from the 40โ€™s, 50โ€™s and 60โ€™s, I would wake up and listen to the soft sound of the bass coming through my bedroom heat register from the stereo. I would try to figure what song was playing and in turn began to develop my musical ear.

I am 3rd born of 4 boys, each one 2 years apart. Growing up with music in our home it came as no surprise that my two older brothers (Mark and Wayne) started a band. When I was 13 it became official when Wayne sold me a Gretsch solid body guitar with one pick-up. This was after years of listening to record albums studying the chords and music by moving the needle back over and over again. There was no internet, no music library at the tips of your fingers; just young men and their blind ambition of hitting the โ€œBig Timeโ€ with our band.

And so began the 20 year journey as the โ€œJohnstonโ€™s Brothers Bandโ€.ย  Later my younger brother Jeff joined us as a vocalist and sound tech. One of the highlights of our time together was placing 1st runner-up in the 1984 Wrangler Country Showdown. This contest included one act from all 50 states vying for the win and culminated in the finals at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville Tennessee. We performed 6 nights a week for many years and in the process recorded three LPโ€™s.

In 1993 I got a call to come down to a studio in Phila, Pa. to play some pedal steel on some songs by Bon Jovi. It was then I met Obie Oโ€™Brien who seemed very impressed with my playing. Through the course of the next 10 years I would regularly come to Jon Bon Joviโ€™s studio. * you can read more about that on the โ€œMy Bon Jovi experienceโ€ page.

I was fortunate to be sought out as an โ€œeclectic worship leaderโ€ for several denominations. I served for 30 years every Sunday and through the week when needed.

*Itโ€™s important to balance a music career with โ€œserviceโ€ of some form. Stay seated in the reality that music is a divine gift and that you are a vehicle through which it flows.

In 2013 my wife and I created a YouTube channel titled โ€œSongs rebornโ€. I recorded 30 spirit filled songs that reflect the eclectic style I so enjoy.

My approach to the Route 66 music; bring everything youโ€™ve got! Donโ€™t be overly influenced by whatโ€™s popular now. Reach into the archives of sound and emotions that you have felt and experienced through the years.

Reflect the fluidity of the music you feel to tell the stories and emotions of the lyrics. Do your very best in your small home studio and release it to the world.

Lifeโ€™s a trip my friends, enjoy the journey!

Kurt and Suzanne Johnston: The Song Writing Team

Kurt and Suzanne Johnston married on March 15th 2013 after a brief courtship, because โ€œwhen you know - you know.โ€ Starting over like two teenagers in their small Georgia home a complimentary song writing team began to form.

Suzanne is a self taught clay sculptor whose artistry remained whimsical. She taught children to sculpt for over 30 years and always enjoyed creating little stories and poems about the clay characters.

One of her favorite pastimes is watching documentaries;ย  she discovered Route 66 and the centennial celebration. Suzanne grew up in Pasadena California and was intrigued with the history.ย  She decided Route 66 needed songs to commemorate the event. Highlighting history, stories and the appeal for a real American road trip, she proposed the idea to her husband Kurt.

Kurt Johnston is a self taught multi-instrumentalist; he remembers being often asked to choose one instrument but equates that idea with trying to choose one word to express emotions. The idea of having such a vast subject matter opened up the floodgates to express himself using a well stocked arsenal of ideas, musical talent and experience.

The Route 66 โ€œLifeโ€™s a Tripโ€ song collection is a tribute to the highway and the people who make the effort to preserve the nuances of an iconic American road trip. It is the outcome of two people giving their all and best to each other; creating something to share and inspire the adventurous spirit in us all. To appreciate and enjoy the life youโ€™ve been blessed with. We are all traveling through space and time together and itโ€™s a trip for sure! Enjoy the music! Enjoy the Journey!
